The short answer
Fractional CFO pricing is rarely published, so the ranges below come from firms that do share numbers. They are wide because the job is wide: a CFO who reviews your model once a quarter and a CFO who runs your board meetings are both called fractional.
| Pricing model | Typical 2026 range | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $3,000 to $12,000 a month | Ongoing reporting, forecasting and decisions |
| Hourly | $150 to $450 an hour | Occasional questions or a one-time model review |
| Project | Scoped per project | A raise, a diligence process or a model build |
| Full-time CFO | $170,000 to $330,000 base salary | Usually $20M+ in revenue, or complex structures |
By stage, early-stage startups usually pay $3,000 to $5,000 a month, Series A companies $5,000 to $10,000, and companies in the middle of a raise often $10,000 or more (Futureproof, February 2026). Full-time base salaries run $170,000 to $240,000 at seed and Series A and $240,000 to $330,000 at Series B, before bonus and equity (Stealth Agents, June 2026).
What drives the price
Hours are the visible driver, but they are a symptom. What actually sets the price is how much there is to get right.
- Complexity. One entity, one revenue stream and three systems is a different job from two entities, usage-based pricing and a payroll provider in another country.
- Stakes and timing. The months before a raise or a sale are dense. Investors and buyers ask detailed questions, and the answers need support.
- Cadence. A monthly review costs less than a CFO in your weekly leadership meeting.
- Scope. Some retainers quietly include bookkeeping or controller work. Others assume you have both. Ask.
- Seniority and specialization. A CFO who has built SaaS reporting for years will charge more per hour, and usually needs fewer of them.
What you should get at each price
A reasonable rule of thumb, based on what the work actually takes:
- Around $1,500 to $3,000 a month: a monthly financial package, a cash forecast and a regular strategy call. Your books need to be reasonably clean already.
- Around $3,000 to $6,000 a month: all of that plus SaaS metrics that tie to the ledger, a board-ready model and a quarterly board pack.
- $6,000 a month and up: weekly involvement, scenario planning for big decisions, and active support through a raise or diligence.
The costs that don't show up on the proposal
- Hourly overages. A retainer with a small hour cap and an hourly rate above it is an hourly engagement with a minimum.
- Software markups. Some firms resell dashboards or planning tools at a margin. Ask what the tools cost directly.
- Who does the work. A senior CFO on the sales call and a junior analyst on the account is common. Ask who you will actually work with.
- Cleanup. If your books are behind, someone has to catch them up first. Better to know before you sign.
How AI changes the math
A large share of what used to fill a fractional CFO's hours is mechanical: pulling exports, reconciling billing to the ledger, building the same charts every month. In 2026 most of that can run automatically and overnight. That should push prices toward judgment, the part that still needs a person, and away from paying senior rates for copy and paste.
When you compare proposals, ask how much of the monthly work is manual. If the answer is most of it, you are paying for time a machine could spend.
How Prinsee prices
We publish our pricing because you should be able to decide whether we are worth a call before you take one.
- Essentials, $1,500 a month, month to month after the Sprint: the monthly package, a cash forecast, a monthly call and three analyst follow-ups a month.
- Growth, $3,500 a month: adds live dashboards in Perch, nightly tie-outs, a board-ready model and a quarterly board pack.
- Scale, $6,500 a month: adds scenario planning, fundraise and diligence support, and a weekly rhythm.
- Finance Automation Sprint, $3,500 flat: two weeks to connect your finance stack and build three workflows you keep. Every plan starts here.
On Essentials, the Sprint is the setup. Growth and Scale add a one-time setup of $7,500 to $15,000, with the Sprint credited toward it. See pricing for everything each plan includes.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Who will do the work every month, and who will I talk to?
- What happens when a month runs over the retainer?
- Which metrics will you report, and how are they defined?
- How do the numbers tie back to the ledger, and how will I know?
- What do I keep if we stop working together?
Common questions
How much does a fractional CFO cost per month?
Typically $3,000 to $12,000 a month on retainer in 2026, with $5,000 to $8,000 the most commonly cited average. Early-stage startups usually pay $3,000 to $5,000.
What is the hourly rate for a fractional CFO?
Usually $150 to $450 an hour, with SaaS and venture specialists at the top of the range. Most fractional CFOs prefer monthly retainers to hourly billing.
Is a fractional CFO cheaper than a full-time CFO?
Almost always below $20M in revenue. A full-time startup CFO costs $170,000 to $330,000 in base salary from seed through Series B, before bonus and equity; a fractional CFO costs $18,000 to $150,000 a year depending on scope.
